Traceability Matters: Give Your Used Avionics a History

When selling used avionics, the equipment is only part of the story. Buyers also want to know where it came from, why it was removed and what condition it was in when it last operated.

That history is called traceability. Providing it can make your equipment easier to evaluate, easier to purchase and more likely to sell.

Buyers Want More Than “It Worked When Removed”

A radio sitting on a shelf might be a perfectly good unit, but without documentation, the buyer has more questions to answer. What aircraft did it come from? Was it removed for an upgrade or because of an intermittent problem? Who removed it and when?

Clear traceability helps answer those questions before they become obstacles to a sale. It gives buyers a better understanding of what they are purchasing and a way to follow up if more information is needed.

Parts with traceability are more likely to sell than parts without it. When buyers have a choice between similar units, a documented history can be the deciding factor.

Your Buyer’s Installer May Require It

Many installers require traceability before they will install used avionics in another aircraft. A buyer may be ready to purchase your equipment, but their shop may decline the installation if its history cannot be established.

Documentation expectations vary by installer, aircraft and equipment. Buyers should confirm what their shop needs before purchasing. Providing removal information and any available supporting records up front helps them make that decision and can prevent delays after the equipment arrives.

Good Records Help Preserve Value

Missing information creates uncertainty. That uncertainty can lead to additional questions, lower offers or a buyer choosing another unit.

Traceability does not guarantee a higher selling price or eliminate the need for testing, but it gives buyers more information to work with. It also helps distinguish a documented removal from an unidentified unit that has been sitting on a shelf for years.

For shops handling multiple removals, labeling each item immediately helps keep aircraft information and condition notes attached to the correct equipment. That is much easier than trying to reconstruct the history months later.

Be Clear About Condition And Known Issues

Traceability is most useful when it is accurate. If a unit had a dim display, intermittent fault or another known issue, include it. If it was removed during a panel upgrade and was operating normally, record that too.

If a detail is unknown, say so rather than guessing. Honest condition notes help buyers understand what further evaluation may be needed and reduce misunderstandings after a sale.

Keep any available maintenance entries, removal records, test reports or other supporting paperwork with the equipment.

Skyman Avionics Makes Traceability Easy

Skyman Avionics now has a fillable PDF traceability tag that owners and shops can complete before shipping their used avionics. This form is also located on the "Sell" page of our website under the Consignment/Sell Application.

The form includes space for:

  • Item or model, part number and serial number

  • Date of removal and aircraft N number

  • Shop that removed the item

  • Condition, reason for removal and known issues

  • Name and contact information of the person completing the tag

Type directly into the PDF or print it and complete it by hand. Each sheet contains eight tags, so you can cut them apart and attach one to each item.

The tag records seller and removal information. It does not certify airworthiness or replace testing, maintenance records or documentation required by the installer.

A Few Minutes Now Can Make Selling Easier Later

The best time to document used avionics is when they come out of the aircraft, while the details are still available.

Before putting equipment on a shelf or packing it for shipment, take a few minutes to complete a traceability tag and gather the supporting records. That small step can build buyer confidence, reduce installation obstacles and improve your equipment’s chances of selling.

Pro Tip: Glue dots work great for attaching tags to items of all sizes. You can buy them on Amazon.
